LINDON, UT (November 1, 2011) — The latest SSL news is centered around 512-bit certificates and hackers who were able to exploit those certificates, issued to a Malaysian-based Certification Authority, presumably by reverse engineering the insecure 512-bit keys. Keeping the Security of Encryption Ahead of the Hackers

Advanced Encryption Standards Keep SSL/TLS Security Ahead of Recent Attack Methodologies

LINDON, UT (September 20, 2011) – The SSL and TLS security standards have been updated many times since the foundations of SSL, dating back to 1995 with SSL 1.0.

The standards of SSL 3.0, or subsequent TLS 1.0 implementations, are today dramatically stronger than their early counterparts, and have often been designed specifically to protect against particular weaknesses discovered in their predecessors. All DigiCert certificates are SSL/TLS compatible through TLS 1.1 and 1.2 (advanced cyber suite implementations not yet commonly used).

Recent announcements point towards a need to switch towards a TLS 1.1 or 1.2 standard in the near future.

Because compatibility with TLS 1.1/1.2 lies in the hands of the programs and devices that utilize certificates (web browsers, mobile devices, etc.), DigiCert is currently in communication with these organizations to ensure that the most advanced encryption standards are in place to help secure web users against potential threats.

Recent News in Attempted Certificate Authority Breaches

Hackers Target Globally Trusted Certificate Authorities.

LINDON, UT (September 15, 2011) – Much of the focus in SSL news lately has been on a series of high profile hack attempts perpetrated against CAs, large and small, all around the world. In at least one case, the hackers were able to issue fraudulent certificates to high profile organizations such as Google and Facebook.

Fortunately, the breach was discovered and the breached roots removed from browser trust stores. No evidence or claims have been presented to date to indicate that DigiCert was a victim of intrusion.

Despite this, we want to assure our customers that absolutely every possible precaution is being taken to ensure that our systems are ever more secure, with both internal and external reviews being conducted of both our systems and our issuance mechanism to guarantee both that an unknown breach did not occur and that such a hack would not be successful if attempted. We are aware that all major CAs are conducting similar investigations.

At DigiCert, we will continue to follow and implement new procedures for enhanced security to help protect our customers and the greater internet community as a whole. System security and redundancies as well as administrator-based protections are part of the infrastructure framework that has helped us protect against breaches up to this point, and we are always in the process of changing and updating our systems to stay ahead of potential security problems.

To learn more about threats to the SSL trust system, including users and Certificate Authorities, see our page on protecting against fraudulent SSL certificates.
