- Acquiring Bank -- The financial company with whom a corporation takes a Merchant Account and which pays money to the "merchant" for sales with credit card, often the first stop a credit card transaction makes. AKA Merchant Bank.
- Active Server Page (ASP) – A Microsoft technology which is an assortment of web pages which includes one or more scripts which dynamically populate the page with information, that is normally from a database, when ever it is viewed, tailoring information to the specific customer.
- Ad Views -- The number of times a web page is dispensed containing a certain advertisement. Websites usually charge advertisers according to the total number of Ad Views or on the number of Clicks.
- Ad Rotation -- Banner ads are frequently rotated in order for visitors view a selection of ads rather than the same ad repeatedly. An ad server normally does ad rotation automatically.
- Ad Server -- A server program that direct and distribute online banner ads for single websites or a group of websites. Ad servers can also track impressions, click-throughs, and site usage, do ad rotation and ad targeting.
- Affiliate Program – The program in which a business allows go-between websites to link to its online storefront, referring customers in return for a sales commission or a flat referral fee.
- Agent -- A program which computerizes tasks according to the preferences of the user, like locating products or comparing multiple websites’ prices. It can identify websites covering a particular topic, or an agent can also filter incoming e-mail.
- Applet -- A minor program, normally written in Java, which can be downloaded with a Web page. Java applets usually support such actions as interactive animations, scrolling text, calculations, or similar web page tasks without transferring a user request to the server.
- Application Server – The single program or group of programs that commonly work with a web server and allow users to carry out high-level tasks, like querying a database or running an additional program, remotely or by a web page transport via the Internet.
- Application Service Provider (ASP) -- An outsourcing supplier used to provide hosted applications software, for example, SAP, Broadvision, or PeopleSoft as a service, permitting companies to rent software instead of purchasing it. The ASP type also facilitates the companies’ ability to outsource related technical staffing and software/hardware maintenance.
- Auction -- A procedure in which purchasers bid for particular products or services. Auctions are often used for price discovery and to sell surplus, excess inventory or hard-to-move items online. See also "Reverse Auction."
- Authentication -- The method of confirming the identity of a user on a secure server in order to decide what manner of access, if any, the user may be given to information or other online resources and potential transactions. Authentication is critical for ecommerce payment systems to accept credit cards online with secure authentication via 256 Bit ssl digital certificates for online security. Users are most commonly validated by a password and username but more complicated systems are also used in today's industrial strength world of encryption.
