Exchange 2007 Troubleshooting & Error Messages

SSL Installation & Configuration Help in Exchange

Wildcards on Exchange 2007

Though Wildcards are usually compatibile with Exchange, they can cause issues when used in conjunction with POP3 and IMAP.

For a full explanation of this issue, see our page on Exchange 2007 Wildcard troubleshooting.

Private Key Missing

"The certificate with thumbprint... was found but is not valid for use with Exchange Server (reason: PrivateKeyMissing)."

When going to enable your certificate for use with Exchange, occasionally admins will see a message that they are unable to complete the operation (reason: PrivateKeyMissing).

Outlook Error Connecting to Exchange

"The name of the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site."

Though this issue is addressed on our generic page resolving this issue it is perhaps helpful to add that if Outlook is attempting to connect to Exchange via an internal name, you must make sure that the internal name being used to connect is listed as a Subject Alternate Name on your SSL certificate.

Duplicate SAN Names

The value '......' is already present in the collection.

When creating the command to run in exchange, make sure that no names are duplicated.

Service Not Installed

"Service is not installed"

This error arises when running the Enable-ExchangeCertificate command from the Exchange Power Shell command line. It means that one of the services for which you are attempting to enable your certificate is not installed.

The easy fix is to remove the offending service from your command and run it again. If you need to have that service enabled, go ahead and install/configure the service, and then run the command again.
