DigiCert Earns Spot on Online Trust Alliance Honor Roll for Leadership in Online Security, Privacy

For sixth consecutive year, Online Trust Alliance recognizes DigiCert’s leadership in best practices

LEHI, UT (June 21, 2017)—DigiCert, a global leader in scalable identity and encryption solutions for enterprise and Internet of Things (IoT) security, earned a place on the Online Trust Alliance (OTA) Honor Roll for the sixth straight year.

The Honor Roll measures high-traffic websites for implementation of online security best practices, data stewardship and responsible privacy practices. The 2017 audit surveyed over 1,000 websites from top retailers, FDIC banks, customer services, media/news outlets and U.S. Federal government sites.

“At DigiCert, we strive to practice what we preach by not only advocating for high standards but implementing them ourselves to protect our systems and the customers who rely on us,” said DigiCert CSO Jason Sabin. “The growth of connected devices and networks increases the need to prioritize good security practices, given the potentially grave and large-scale consequences. Our work with the OTA and other industry partners is more important than ever in raising awareness about the importance of identity, encryption and data integrity.”

“DigiCert consistently demonstrates leadership in developing and advocating best practices for online security and privacy,” said Craig Spiezle, president and executive director of the Online Trust Alliance. “As seemingly everything is connected to the Internet over the next few years, DigiCert’s commitment to high standards and innovative PKI management platforms is important for reliable security and privacy.”

While reviewing industry progress to adopt leading online security and privacy practices, the 2017 OTA Honor Roll notes the growing progress toward encrypting the web by default. This year’s survey unveiled dramatic growth in TLS, commonly referred to as SSL, with adoption increasing from an average of 23 percent in 2015 to more than 65 percent in 2017.

The Honor Roll also measures the growth rate of extended validation (EV) certificates, the strongest form of certificate owner identity vetting, which grew by 13 percent over 2016. The OTA recommends EV over domain validation (DV) certificates to protect against an increasing trend in cyber criminals using DV certificates for phishing campaigns and other online deception.
Since 2008, the OTA has published the Honor Roll to drive awareness and adoption of best practices for online security and privacy. Each year, more companies qualify for the Honor Roll, even as the OTA increases by the standards by which organizations are measured.
