What is identity proofing?

Identity proofing, also known as Remote Identity Validation (RIV), is a method to verify and authenticate the identity of a person through government identification, biometrics, facial recognition, or other means of identity validation. It can be used to access healthcare data, onboarding with insurance or banking organizations, remote hiring, or even online education. Remote identity proofing (RIDP) is a secure way to authenticate identity and digitally onboard a signer or a customer. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has a comprehensive guide for validating a person’s identity.

DigiCert offers remote identity proofing with Verify by DigiCert, a feature of DigiCert® Document Trust Manager for enabling remote user onboarding.
